On Sunday London celebrated the 14th Baishakhi Mela in Brick Lane.
The Mela has been held since 1997 and is based on the Pohela Baishakh held in Bangladesh in April. Although a celebration of the Bangladeshi New-Year the parade is held the second weekend in May to better avoid the English rain.
The parade winds through Tower Hamlets from Allen Gardens via Brick Lane to Weavers Field in Bethnal Green – an area which is now served by our first female Bangladeshi MP.
In size the event is second only to the famous Notting Hill Carnival and pulls in over 80,000 visitors.
