BBC Janala – a project from the BBC’s World Service that we highlighted earlier this year, has won a prestigious Microsoft Education Award at the International Tech Awards held in California’s Silicon Valley. Janala teaches English to Millions of people, including some of the poorest in Bangladesh by using mobile phone technology. At just 50 paisa per minute, the 3-minute lessons are broadcast daily to phones.
Janala also includes TV drama and game show and other lessons lessons targeting the 84% of the population of over 50 million mobile phone users who want to improve their English and their lives by getting better jobs and the ability to work worldwide. It’s been a very successful first year for the service, clocking up over 3 and a half million calls and culminating in this prestigious award.
