Although we were invited to the event by a certain Council Candidate who collected an award for the Syhet Times back when it was a printed paper, we don’t curry favour with any political party. We went along to a Labour fund-raiser hosted by Minister of State and MP for Oldham East & Saddleworth Phil Woolas at Kaly’s Playland in Oldham a most colourful setting for a political event. Not only Labour’s red but a rainbow of colour was present in the childrens’ activity areas around us. Picture Gallery
Phil spoke of his party’s fundamental commitment to equality and the work that the party has done in investing in regeneration of the area by building schools and supporting local business. He also cautioned against complacency and potentially letting the town fall into the hands of the Liberal Democrats or by flirting with the the lib-dems nationally – letting the Conservatives win the House of Commons – the election vote could be that close.
This was a call to the faithful – an audience of labour supporters and local council candidates, a reminder for them not to waver as every vote would be important – a point well made and one that each party would do well to take on-board.
The Sylhet Times intends to report fully on the case put forward by each of the parties in this election and welcomes any opportunity to chat with candidates – we will be making contact and reporting on their efforts and aspirations very soon.
