    How do you Measure Success?

by st contributor Tuesday 29th June 2010

academy northOldham Academy North Principal Designate, Colette Burgess states that success is a very personal and individual thing.

“Our Academy will tailor a curriculum that will enable all students to achieve their own individual potential.”

Success means very different things to different people and is indeed as varied as the people and communities that we live in.  For some, success is measured by the size of the house they live in, the amount of money in their bank accounts or even the number of villas owned in Dubai!  For others, success is measured through satisfaction in the heart and how good they feel about themselves and those around them.  This is not quite so tangible or measurable but is a kind of feeling that doesn’t sit well with statistics and numbers. However, it is still very important to many people.  For me personally, success is the knowledge that I have done a worthwhile job to the very best of my ability.

If you ask me what will success look like for the Oldham Academy North and our students, I would say that success is ensuring that our leavers will:

    • Be confident and feel secure about who they are
    • Have a strong desire and focus about what they want their life and achievements to be
    • Be able to articulate their ideas boldly and proudly
    • Know their ambitions and be assertive about their beliefs
    • Be independent learners who will be able to find, process and analyse information and knowledge for themselves.
    • Be passionate about learning – learners who recognise that seeking knowledge is a lifelong thing.
    • Positively contribute to their community
    • Have excellent literacy and numeracy skills.

I think I was born with a thirst for knowledge and that feeling has never left me. There is so much to learn about the world, how is works and those who inhabit it but just not enough time to take it all in.  I am passionate about reading. After keeping myself up to date with education thinking and research, I enjoy reading for pleasure and learning about the people in the present and past.  Having recently read the History of the Arab Peoples, I am now delving into The History of the Classical World and just for a little light relief I am also reading the latest novel The No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency.

It is this passion for reading, learning and knowledge that I want to inspire in our students at The Oldham Academy North.  I want all our students and their families to be as passionate about learning as I am and celebrating the knowledge and talents of others in turn.  There are many things I have yet to learn – not least of which is how to use a Wii Fit! For that, I turn to my son who is the expert in my family.
