A strong earthquake lasting 2 minutes shook Bangladesh on saturday evening.
The quake felt in Dhaka measured 6.8 on the Richter scale and was centred in the the Indian state of Sikkim some 495 km away and while damage occurred no casualties have been reported. Thousands ran into the streets for safety in the grip of the strongest quake felt in the area in 60 years.
In Dhaka buildings suffered some damage and broken windows, mobile services were interrupted. Power plants at Tangail, Thakurgaon, Jessore and Syedpur were offline for half an hour during the quake and in Baropukuria coal miners were temporarily trapped underground due to power failure.
