According to the latest figures the total number of mobile phones now stands around 62 Million bringing mobile phone ownership to 40% compared with 31% one year ago. Leading operator Grameenphone gained 910,000 new subscribers in June alone with Banglalink adding 510,000 that month and Robi 140,000 while state-run provider Teletalk lost 130,000 subscribers to the competition.
The recent study “Towards a connected Bangladesh: Socio-economic Impact of Internet in Bangladesh Economy” published in January this year suggested that the number of Internet subscribers in Bangladesh could reach 18.3 million or 32% of households, contributing 2.6% to the countries GDP with the creation of 129,000 by the year 2020.
Currently just 5 Million people, or 4% of the population of Bangaldesh have access to the internet 4.6 Million of whom access it through mobiles. So mobile internet technologies such as WiMax are seen as key to achieving this increase – particularly in rural areas.
