New Port Will Boost Trade with India

ContainersA new container-port is to be built at Ashuganj, Chittagong only 49km from the Tripura border with India. The joint-venture between Bangladesh and India costing Tk 250 crore is expected to be complete in 2013, but the benfits are hoped to kick-in much sooner due to the improvement of existing infrastructure.

Goods will flow through the port northeast to Tripaura and beyond. The Indian Government will pay for upgrading the Ashuganj to Akhaura road to make it suitable for transporting cargo shipments. The overall cost of the new facility is being met by the $1bn credit extend to Bangladesh by India.
