Modern Apprentice (Swim Instruction) (12 month period)
Up to 37 Hours per Week

This is an exciting opportunity for enthusiastic individual’s to join the team at Oldham Community Leisure in the role of Swim Instruction Modern Apprentice for a twelve month period starting in February 2013.

Individuals will be supported to achieve a National Vocational Qualification in Activity Leadership, relevant key skills and also undergo in-house training.  The in-house training provided will include Pool Lifeguard and Swim Teachers qualifications along with training in Safeguarding.

There are currently various hours available across OCL sites; however lessons predominantly run during the day, early evening and weekends.  The role will include evening and weekend work.  The hours of work will be up to a maximum of 37 hours per week.  The rate of pay for the role is £98.05 per week.  This is a consolidated rate of pay and covers all hours worked.

The Pool Lifeguard qualification is a requirement of the role and therefore will require successful candidates to be a competent swimmer.

1. Improve Our Systems

To play an active role in the organization of swimming tuition programme including planning, quality assurance systems and meeting the requirements of Best Value.

To undertake administration of the swimming awards scheme and other administration duties related to the Oldham Swim Scheme.

To act as a point of contact for all Centre enquiries either by telephone, email or face to face and contribute to the smooth running of the Centre reception.

You will promote good health and safety at work practices in accordance with the leisure centre policies and procedures

You will report accidents, injuries and incidents according to the procedures laid down (e.g. RIDDOR)

You will set out and return to store any equipment that may be required observing at all times the correct procedures and techniques of moving such equipment and ensuring their safe and correct storage.

2. Care for Our Customers

To ensure that all operations are undertaken with due regard to accurate up to date legislation such as Health and Safety, Risk assessments and Child Protection Act. Ensuring safe systems of work are in place together with the appropriate records.

You will assemble and dismantle equipment for swim sessions.

You will be responsible for overseeing and general safety and behaviour of the public to prevent injury and misuse and damage to facilities.

You will give trained assistance to users in difficulty (including the use of appropriate appliances).

You will direct the activities of users to prevent injury, misuse and damage to facilities or equipment.

You will assist in maintaining a friendly atmosphere by being polite and courteous.

You will observe the standard of service to the customer as laid down by the Manager.

You will constantly check for any obstacles or damage that could in anyway endanger the health and safety of staff or customers and report this to the Team Leader.

Carry out cleaning duties as and when required.

To be responsible for the provision of a consistent, efficient and cost effective service to customers and participants, ensuring that the service continues to improve and develop in the future.

Liaise with user groups, stakeholders and partners giving to the desired outputs of the Strategic Performance Plan.

4. Develop Our Staff and Culture

You will complete all training required of you within given timescales to the standard expected by OCL and any external training provider.

You will maintain a high standard of work and personal hygiene.

You will adhere to OCLL’s policy on corporate identity and represent the council accordingly by wearing correct uniform at all times.

You must attend staff training or meeting when required by the Facility Manager.
To work in conjunction with the Advanced Training Scheme staff as required in the implementation of the Oldham Swim Development Scheme.

5. Improve Our Business Results

To be responsible for advising the Aquatic Team Leader on all matters including producing reports, attending meetings of working parties such as swimming teachers meetings and other groups as directed from time to time.
You will be competent in lifesaving and resuscitation techniques.
You will administer First Aid as necessary and as appropriate to your qualification.
You will carry out any other duties commensurate with the salary grade and responsibility of the post.

Work Experience

Previous experience of working in a public leisure centre or the private sector industry.

Ability to work as part of a team.
