On the Election Beat

Micheal Meacher and Abdul Malik campaign trailIt’s the second day after the announcement of the General Election and we can see the increased activity on the streets, canvassing in earnest by local candidates spreading the word for their parties. In Garforth Street we found Labour MP Micheal Meacher and prospective Councillor Abdul Malik where were both knocking on doors and introducing themselves as candidates for the labour party.  Michael Meacher MP is the candidate for the Oldham West & Royton Parliamentary seat and Abdul Malik the Coldhurst Ward candidate for the local council election.
On a lovely summer evening both dressed smart and red tie they were invited into the local sari shop where the owner and his family were very happy to see the candidates and show them his shop. So far on their campaign trail, they have received warm reception.  One woman said that she had never voted before – but since Michael Meacher MP was there in person she would consider voting. In an election as close as this one looks like being every vote will matter so it’s particularly important to motivate those who might otherwise stay at home.
