It’s new year in Bangladesh and (on the 15th) in India, West Bengal and Assam and the Sylhet Times Digital wishes you all a peaceful, prosperous and utterly brilliant Nôbobôrsho.
Of course in Bangladesh it’s a public holiday with events and processions from morning onwards like the Mongol Shovajatra laid on by students at Institute of  Fine Arts in Dhaka. Television and the newspapers are all producing New Year specials for the day too.
PM Sheikh Hasina also gave her new year’s greeting today taking the opportunity to  ask for patience during the current water and power shortages and encouraged the people to save power
“a little carefulness on your part could save huge amount of electricity.” She reminded the nation that despite the problems this was still a day to celebrate and urged all to join in by taking a vow to help free the country from poverty and illiteracy. “I know, there are sorrows and sufferings, but above everything we’re enjoying the first day of the Bengali New year. On this great occasion, I wish all people ‘Shuvo Nabobarsha’.”

In the UK celebrations will be occurring in several cities including an event at Manchester University and the Baishakhi Mela at London’s Brick Lane.
