The proceeds of the event are for the joint programme between BRAC and Sightsavers International, who are working in Bangladesh to eliminate avoidable blindness and promote equality of opportunity for disabled people in the developing world under the “Vision Bangladesh” agenda by 2014.

The Charity Iftar, now in it’s 3rd year held at the Olive Tree Restaurant in Rochdale was attended by members of the Rochdale Bangladeshi Partnership Project (RBPP) including Chairperson Keith Swift, Vice Chairperson Dr Musharraf Hussain, Secretary Mohammed Dobir Miah, Treasurer Sajjad Miah & Shelina Begum.

There were also friends, family and members of the public present including Councillor Shefali Begum, Councillor Farooq Ahmed, Feroza Hussain, Ferdousi Begum, Kamrul Choudhury & Imam of Jalalia Mosque Luqman Faruquee.

The RBPP organises an Iftar (gathering) on an annual basis, but since last 2010 decided to include fundraising as part of it.

The event included a meal to open the fast at the end of the day when the sunsets, a brief outline of the project given by Dr Hussain and the fundraising was conducted by Dobir Miah. Prayers led by Moulana Faruquee was made for all of mankind including those less fortunate than us.

The money raised, £1260 in total on the night, together with any others received afterwards will be forwarded to the BRAC UK offices who will make arrangements in conjunction with Sightsavers International for providing cataract operations in the Sylhet region of Bangladesh. Sylhet was adjoined to Rochdale through a Friendship Link 2 years ago.

The RBPP is proud to be associated with BRAC and Sightsavers International – two great organisations who have excellent track records. The RBPP hope to support future initiatives through more fundraising activities.

Secretary of RBPP, Mohammed Dobir Miah added: “We are grateful for all the donations made at the charity Iftar, the amount raised on the night will allow for 63 free cataract operations. On behalf of the RBPP I would like to thank all those who took part in the charity Iftar. We hope that our contribution will go a long way to help those who are less fortunate and with better vision can build their lives.”
