Today Sir Gerald Kaufman Celebrates his 80th Birthday and 40Years in Parliament.
The Sylhet Times visited a party held in his honour yesterday at Birch Community Hall in Manchester where he has been an MP since 1970, first for Manchester Ardwick 1970-’83 and currently for Manchester Gorton since 1983.
While Sir Gerald has been a journalist and writer it is fair to say it is his work in politics that he is best recognised. An influential and respected Labour politician he was Knighted for his services in 2004.
At the event Ahmed Ali the chair of Labour in Rusholme introduced proceedings and thanked Sir Gerald for his services to the immigrant community of the UK. Sir Gerald was presented with a framed photograph as a momento of one specific occasion in 1978. The picture showing him with Mubaswir Khan the then President of the Bangladesh Association in Oldham during the “Divided Families” campaign which aimed to secure the rights for family members to join their members living in England and to remove some of the tests placed of them such as the gynecological “virginity tests” then being carried out upon women arriving as fiancés from south-east asian countries. The presentation was made by Mosahir’s son Muzahid, also an active member of the community.
