Tour De Sylhet 2014 – The Return

In 2010 a group of cyclists from the UK cycled from Sylhet to Cox’s Bazaar. There they were joined by Bangladesh cyclists from each of the regions they passed through, forming a convoy of more than 100 during their trek. Today they once again departed the UK heading for a less arduous, but equally exciting tour around the region of Sylhet. They will encounter a different cycling landscape, not just the improved roads – but in the intervening years Bangladesh has gone cycling mad! Cycling is now huge in Bangladesh with clubs such as Dhaka’s BD Cyclists who can now boast of 16,000 members and was recently featured in BBC news coverage of the Queen’s Baton Relay .

For Tour de Sylhet 2010 local soft drinks empire CLEMON is again lending their support. The team flew from Manchester Airport today for some it will be their first experience of Bangladesh, for others such as team coach Phil Buckley, one of many *– and in a few days will be met by the Shahjala Football Club from Oldham, who are doing a tour and playing in Bangladesh at the same time.

* While the trek Sylhet to Cox’s Bazaar in 2010 was a huge event, Phil and a small group also cycled the 350 mile route in 2009, and in year 2000 completed the first cycle Tour de Sylhet, 150 mile solo – in four days visiting Singerkach, Nabiganj, Moulvibazar and Sylhet.
